DESCRIPTION/ABSTRACT:

Sequence and structure genomics have generated a wealth of data, but extracting meaningful information from genomic information is becoming an increasingly difficult challenge. Both the number and the diversity of discovered genes are increasing, and about 40% of known sequences are tagged as “unknown function.” Automated protein function prediction is rapidly gaining interest among computational biologists in academia and industry. The second Automated Function Prediction (AFP) meeting is a three-day event, August 30-September 1st , 2006 in Atkinson Hall, the Calit2 building on the UC San Diego campus.AFP 2006 will feature keynote talks by the following speakers, all of which will be webcast live and archived for later on-demand viewing, with support from the UCSD division of Calit2:

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 30

  • Adam Godzik, Burnham Institute  9AM
  • Christos Ouzounis, European Bioinformatics Institute 11AM
  • Steven Brenner, UC Berkeley 2PM
  • Russ Altman, Stanford University 4:50PM

THURSDAY, AUGUST 31

  • Anna Tramontano, University of Rome, “La Sapienza” 8:30AM
  • Shoshana Wodak, University of Toronto 11AM
  • Terry Gaasterland, Scripps Institute of Oceanography 2PM

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 1

  • Philip Bourne, UCSD and Protein Data Bank 8:30AM

Talks and posters will cover:

  • Sequence based methods.
